Degradation of the Azov Sea regional socio-ecological system.

GOALS

The main aim of this project is investigation of the consequences of the following kinds of the human activity in the region:
  • Fishery (the link between of plankton and benthic invertebrates biomass and the fishes production, including feedback links)
  • Anthropogenic pollution (heavy metals, PCBs, pesticides), rice production
  • Eutrophication (enriched content of nutrients in Don and Kuban rivers), as the reason of hypoxia and temporal anoxia
  • Changes of salinity

The specific problem of the project is studying of the interrelationship between the natural and anthropogenic aspects of the sea state and development. For this purpose we plan to collect the archive, to elaborate it and to use as a background for the analysis, modelling and forecast estimates.

The main research question is elaborating of the complex multidiscipline approach that will be possible to use for prediction of the Azov Sea aquatic system behaviour.

The expected conclusions of the project should be the obtaining of concrete numerical estimates of the possible changes of the sea nature connected with the variability of the anthropogenic influence intensity.

The theoretical background is the knowledge of the peculiarities of the processes being studied and the database of the sea nature characteristics. The experience of the team members will as well contribute to the problem solving. The multidiscipline character of the planning approach makes it unique and possible resolve the project goals.
