The conference will focus on loess stratigraphy, paleopedology, paleontological sequences (pollen, mollusks and mammals), glacial phenomena, Paleolithic archaeology and Quaternary dating methods; a main issue will be the inter-regional East-West correlation of the European Quaternary. Colleagues are invited to participate and to present lectures and posters on the topics of the meeting.

The conference includes:

2 days of lectures

3 days of excursion - to visit Quaternary sites along the route Kyiv - Lubny - Svitlovodsk - Kaniv - Kyiv (one way distance about 300 km)

a cultural programme: city tour and historical heritage of Ukraine along the excursion route.

The scientific excursion objects are:

  • the Vyazivok section - a complete Middle to Upper Pleistocene loess-paleosol sequence in the Middle Dnieper area (20 loess and soil units);
  • the Stari Bezradychy section – the Upper Pleistocene loess-paleosol sequence. Soil successions of Eemian, Early Glacial and Middle Pleniglacial age (the pedocomplexes from 2-3 soils each);

The Upper Pleistocene sequence Stari Bezradychy

The Upper Paleolithic site Mezhyrich

The Middle Pleistocene sequence of the Vyazivok site

The glaciotectonics of the Pivikha site

  • the Nagornoye section - the Middle Pleistocene loess-paleosol sequence. Climatic changes during Middle Pleistocene interglacials recorded in soil successions;
  • the Grebeni section - a cross-section along the ancient erosionally dissected plateau: the Middle and Upper Pleistocene pedocomplexes on plateau and in valleys;
  • the Pivikha hill - glaciotectonic structures (the Eocene - Middle Pleistocene deposits involved), the Middle Pleistocene alluvial deposits with small mammal faunas and the Upper Pleistocene loess-paleosol sequences;
  • the Kaniv hills - glaciotectonic structures (the Jurassic- Middle Pleistocene deposits involved);
  • the Dobranichivka site - Upper Paleolithic and paleozoological remains in situ. Remnants of 4 mammoth bone cabins (about 3000 mammoth bones) in the museum built on the site;
  • the Mezhirich site - the Upper Paleolithic and paleozoological site (about 10 thousands bones) with the mammoth bone hut preserved in situ.

The approximate cost of the conference will be between $160 – 300 depending on individual participation in the arrangements (conference, excursion, cultural program).

Participants will be provided with the conference abstracts and an excursion guidebook. The conference proceeding will be published one year after the meeting by the Institute of Geological Sciences and edited by Thijs van Kolfschoten, Philip Gibbard, Petro Gozhik and Natalia Gerasimenko.

The more detailed information will be provided in the 2nd Circular which will be sent on the 1 of January 2001 to those who respond to the 1st Circular before the 1st of December (the application form below).
