Commission plans for the next INQUA Congress

It was decided to forward a letter to the Organising Committee of XV INQUA Congress, asking them to establish Paleopedology Symposia and to include visit to deep weathering profiles and calcrete colluvial sequences into the program of field excursions.

G. Botha from South Africa informed us, that the organising committee of INQUA 1999 in Durban has asked him to conduct a pre- or post-congress field trip to the study the colluvium and palaeosols in northern KwaZulu/Natal. This matter was preliminary discussed with some of the commission members in Berlin and some suggested that they would like to see some of the soils of this sub-tropical to semi-arid region as well. Apart from the colluvial deposits and paleosols there are also duricrusts developed on a Cretaceous to Miocene deep weathering surface and rubified dunes of different ages (Neogene-Recent) and a range of recent soil types. G. Botha considers, that it might be a useful exercise to inquire of the commission members what kind of field trips they would like to have during the 1999 Congress. There is still plenty of time to decide but a preliminary plan will be needed for the first circular.
